Itinerary
Our driver will get you up from the hotel in the morning and take you to the Londorossi gate. You will be registered at the gate and have to sign a few documents. Following registration, you will be driven to the start of your journey, which is a rocky road that leads into the thick rainforest. To get to Mkubwa Camp, you will travel a somewhat steep path through a breathtaking, pristine natural forest. During the first two days of your journey, you will be followed by an armed ranger because this area is also home to wild game.
• Elevation: 2389m – 2785m • Distance: 5km
Accomodation: Budget camping
On this day, the trek will start on a small trail that passes through the rainforest. As you climb, the forest gradually thins out and the landscape changes into heath and moorland where plants like Erica and lobelia start to dominate the landscape. You will cross the Shira Ridge and reach Shira Camp 1. Here you will stop for lunch, relax a bit and enjoy the fantastic views of Mt Meru and the Rift Valley. For the last part of the climb, you will climb another 400m in altitude. The landscape will change again at Shira Camp 2. Shira camp 2 is the final destination for this day and you will spend your evening and night there.
• Elevation: 2785m – 3895m • Distance: 17km
Accomodation: Budget camping
Although you will ascend about 740 meters today, you will only spend the night at a marginally higher elevation than you were the night before. The hike starts with a lengthy climb above the Shira Plateau toward the Lava Tower, which will enable your body to adjust to the changing climate. The hike goes past the expansive Barranco Valley, which is home to enormous Senecio plants and lobelia.
Elevation:3895m – 3986m • Distance:10km
Accomodation: Budget camping
you will depart Barranco and proceed to the Karanga Valley campsite by crossing the Barranco Wall and continuing on a rocky ridge. After that, you will exit Karanga and arrive at the intersection with the Mweka Trail. To be ready for the next summit night, you can unwind and stretch your legs in the afternoon.
• Elevation: 3986m – 4034m • Distance: 5km
Accomodation: Budget camping
You will proceed to the Barafu Hut on this day. You have now finished the South Circuit, which provides a variety of perspectives on the peak. Here, you will set up camp, relax, eat dinner, and get ready for the day of the summit. From here, one can see the two peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.
Elevation:4034m – 4662m • Distance: 5km
Accomodation: Budget camping
Around midnight, when the lava ash is still frozen and easier to walk on, the ascent starts after a cup of hot tea and a small lunch. Between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, we keep going until we reach the peak. In order to reach Stella Point on the crater rim, you travel northwest and climb through thick scree. You will be rewarded with the most breathtaking sunrise you are likely to ever witness when you pause for a brief rest at Stella Point. The one-hour climb to the peak from Stella Point covered in snow. You have arrived at Mount Kilimanjaro's highest point, Uhuru Peak, and the continent of Africa! From the summit we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp.
Accomodation: Budget camping
We continue our descent to the Mweka Park Gate to pick up your summit certificates after breakfast. It might get muddy and damp at lower elevations. Trekking poles and gaiters will be beneficial. It will likely be plenty of time to wear shorts and t-shirts (make sure to have warmer clothes and rain gear on hand). To transport you back to your lodging, our car will be waiting for you at the Mweka gate.
